Hi Pat -
I have a little for your search on Charles Holmes Sturtevant. My direct line does not include Sturtevants but a cousin for whom I am doing some searching does include Sturtevants back through Francis and Jerusha to Samuel the first into the country. Charles was presumably born in Fairlee, Orange Co., Vermont. He married 1) Prudence Keller 29 Sep 1842 and had 6 children before she died in 1855 (last child also died the same year - childbirth?) He remarried in 1857 to Amanda Sophia Brown and had 4 more children. According to information I have Francis died in W. Fairlee, Vermont, and Jerusha died at the home of her daughter Ann Sturtevant Peck in Chicago, Cook, Illinois. The genealogy of a son of the second marriage John Loomis Sturtevant is included in "The Compendium of American Genealogy: First Families of America" volume 5, page 524, again giving few place names.

In contact with Shelby Black at <Body Being@aol.com> I was furnished some correspondence from the early 1900's between a couple of Sturtevant women setting out and comparing notes on some of the family and also included were some census records relating to the Francis-Jerusha 18 children. Some records were pretty dark. If you ask for copies maybe request that less contrast be used. Not many place names are included so may not help too much. Some family members are included in records available at the Family History Centers or on the internet at http://www.familysearch.org where using the Custom button you can search Ancestral File for connected pedigrees and family groups (unfortunately, the data is not verified but you can find out names of submitters to contact if you disagree or find new data that you need sources for) or for records of births or marriages in the International Genealogical Index (IGI). These records indicate that Francis and Jerusha married in Hadley, Hampshire, Massachusetts and had 3 children there then off to Versailles, Vermont where the next 5 were born and then on to Orange County, Vermont, where the rest were born - 2 in West Fairlee, one in Thetford, and 7 in Fairlee.

Good luck on your search for place names!

Ray
