bio. from the Adolf Gerber Lists, p. 123. Journeyman mason of Neuffen [Germany] b. 12/2/1725. Promised in marriage to Ursula [Koempf] Steinlin, dau of the late Mayor [Schultheiss] Koempf, and widow of the mason Steinlin. According to the records of the Lutheran State-Church Convocation: When marriage was denied him in Neuffen, J.M. Stock came to Stammheim in 2/1749, where as a journeyman of her late husband's trade, Stock approached the young widow Steinlin, who was not yet 21, and proposed marriage. In 3/1749 three townsmen, who intended to drive the outsider Stock out of the village, got together, and 2 of them climbed a ladder one night, to surprise Stock in his intended's chamber.
Although they did not find him there, he was in the house, and flourishing a knife, drove them away. Without proof of impropriety, they were not successful in their complaints against him. The widow defended her reception and housing of Stock, as a journeyman of her husband's trade guild, and therefore a usage of the trade. In Stammheim, Wuerttemberg, on St. Georges Day 4/23/1749, in the presence of her brothers, they were engaged to be married, and without waiting for actual marriage, which in their case had impediments, they had a child in 1/1750. Since the pastor could not accomplish their separation, he asked his superiors to support him in his desire to help Stock receive naturalization and
formal marriage, because Stock had skills needed in the village since the death of mason Steinlin and Stock "well understood his trade as mason." A request for information in Neuffen disclosed that several years previously, Stock had eloped with a serving maid from Reutlingen and had enlisted in Switzerland for military service in Gorckum [Gorinchem] in Holland, where according to his account, she was married to him and subsequently died. Thereupon he deserted, to return home, and wanted to marry again. At the protest of the relatives of the allegedly deceased first wife, the authorities demanded that he produce a certificate of marriage and death from Holland of his wife. But, neither his regiment nor the local magistrate responded to the request for verification. So, Stock was denied citizenship at Stammheim. Not long after this, he went with his betrothed Ursula Koempf [Steinlin] to America. // 3PA, 24,760: Melchior Stock, 120 acres, Cumberland Co.
