Stuart Family Genealogy Forum
Seeing the title of this thread, I was struck by the coincidence of these two names being used together given that today I found the birth record of my 3rd great-grandfather James Stewart/Stuart b. 6 Jan 1797 in Mortlach (now called Dufftown), Banff. His father's name is given as "ROBERT STUART ALIAS McALAY", and one of the witnesses on the record is a "ROBERT STUART ALIAS MOIR"!
It seems odd that both men with the surname STUART have aliases, and stranger (to me) still that their aliases are different, because I would have assumed that in one small rural area of Banffshire, within a 3 mile radius of each other, the men would be related - possibly even father and son. Also, if they felt compelled to use an alternate name, possibly because the Stuart name was outlawed in those sensitive times, then it would be the same one. Or could the aliases be their mother's maiden surnames?
