Hi,
Thank you for coming back to me on this one.
Primarily, I am trying to find information on a faithful servant of NWI Strode whose name was Samuel Adams. I believe that he and his (2nd?) wife Eliza (nee Jackson) are buried in the graveyard of St. Nicolas Church, Chislehurst and I am told that there is an inscription along the following lines on that grave:
"He was for 23 years the faithful servant and friend of HWI Strode Esq of Campden Place. This memorial was erected as a last tribute of respect by friends and neighbours"
... although I think that the "HWI" is a misreading of "NWI".
Now, Samuel died in 1878 so I suppose that the 23 years in question must have lasted from 1855 (or before) to 1878 (or before).
Samuel was born in Kingsley in Staffordshire in about 1825 and the 1841 census (HO107/1007) records a household comprising a Samuel (b. c1771) and Mary (b.c1794) Adams (presumed parents of "my" Samuel), with youngsters William (b. c1816), Mary (b. c1818), Samuel (b. c1826) and Sarah (b. c1828).
By the time of the 1851 census (HO107/1496), there is a Samuel Adams (b. c1826)living in Pancras in London with Ann Adams (b. c 1821), Sarah Simmonds (b. c 1843), Julia Simmonds (b. c1945) and Samuel Adams (b. c1849). There is also a marriage of a Samuel Adams to an Ann Simmonds in Pancras in 1848 (1848/Q4/Pancras/1/337) and the birth of a Samuel Adams (junior) in Pancras in 1849 (1849/Q1/Pancras/1/378).
By the time of the 1861 census, a Samuel and Eliza (already living under the surname of Adams) are recorded as living in Kent (RG9/412). If this is the same Samuel as in the 1851 census, it is not clear what happened to his first wife, Ann, or his son, Samuel.
Sam and Eliza appear to have got married in 1869 in the Strand district of London.
In 1871, Sam and Eliza are recorded as living in Campden House, Chislehurst.
My interest is that Sam and Eliza were the adopted parents of by Great Grandmother. She was orphaned in 1873 and was taken in by the Adams' who were (or possibly had been) fulfilling the role of Steward to the household of Napoleon III and Empress Eugenie in Chislehurst.
As you can see, there are some significant gaps in my knowledge of Samuel Adams, particularly in the area of his possible two marriages. I also don't know what brought him south from Staffordshire. On the first of these points, it seems to me that the mysterious period in the 1850s probably coincides with the beginning of his association with NWI Strode, although I don't actually know whether Mr. Strode had property in London at that time. By 1861, the Adams/Strode link should certainly have been well established but I cannot remember exactly which part of Kent the census area RG9/412 is - somewhere around Lewisham, perhaps. Again was there any Strode property in Kent at that time?
I would be extremely interested to know whether you have come across any records relating to the Adams' and whether you might have any historical photos, either of them or of Mr. Strode. I have an album (thought to be that of my Great Grandmother) positively full of photos that I cannot identify.
Hoping that you may be able to help in this enterprise,
John.
