June,
I apologize for not getting back to you sooner. My first Strickland ancestor that I found was Harriet Strickland, daughter of John Strickland and Elizabeth Fleshman, who was born in Virginia in 1836 and died in Putnam County, West Virginia. She married a Henry W. Bays (Bayes) and had a daughter named Amelia Lee Bayes that married my gg grandfather, Walter Eugene Foster.
It had puzzled me to no end as to how my gg grandfather ended up in Putnam County, West Virginia to marry Amelia and then came back to Virginia immediately, he having been born in Rockingham County and having been raised in Rockbridge County, Virginia around Lexington.
It turns out that my ggg grandfather, Thomas F. Foster, married a Garland that was directly related to the Witt family of Albemarle and Nelson Counties. I soon found that a lot of Witts in Nelson County married Stricklands from that same county. Ellis and John (father of Harriet) allegedly come from there. Another potential brother of John and Ellis is a Zebulon M. Strickland, who lived his entire life in Nelson County from the time he was born ca. 1808 to his death after 1880. Zebulon had a child, Nannie Strickland, who married Jesse David Witt, another Witt relative of mine.
I have not gone any further but I am almost 100% sure that my Stricklands do not come from New Jersey and instead come from Matthew Strickland, immigrant ancestor, whose descendants lived in Isle of Wight County, Virginia very early on in the time of the Colony.
Does this match anything in your notes?
