Bill,
There is a bit of evidence to suggest that perhaps the Revolutionary War soldier named John Strickland that was supposedly the grandfather of Randolph and Obed Frank (and assumed father of the 1820c. Obid) was actually John Strickland Jr (II) of Greenfield Massachusetts. John Strickland (I) (b. abt 1723d. Dec, 13, 1814, buried at Log Plain Cemetery in Greenfield MA) and husband of Margaret(b. abt 1720 d. Dec 3, 1804, buried at Log Plain) is the father of John Strickland Jr (II) (b. abt1748d. July, 11, 1802 and also buried at Log Plain). John II may have been married to a Ruth originally from Granville MA (who died there suddenly in 1813 while visiting her home town) and he may have been the father of Ruth and Sarah (Sarah’s gravesite, b. abt. 1797 and d. 1835 is right next to John Jrs with no others immediately on either side). John’s older brother David was made executer in John I’s will dated Christmas Eve 1800. John Jr. (II) was the father of John (III) who apparently married Betsey Persons (Parsons) in late 1800 in Greenfield MA (John III b. April, 1, 1781d. March, 21, 1876 and buried in Strickland Cemetery in Alaiedon, Ingham, MI). The 1810c is silent but it appears that John III and Betsey started making their way west out of MA around 1815 after the passing of John I and his wife, John II’s and his wife, and 1st cousin Capt David Strickland Jr. (also supporting this timetable is the birth state for one of John III’s children, Lucina Strickland, who was b. abt 1812 in MA, see 1880c Lucina Mills, and married in 1830 Washtenaw Co MI to local notable Major David Mills of Ionia MI. The History of Ionia Co MI also mentions that Lucina spent her childhood in Steuben Co NY). The 1820c shows a John Strickland and his family living in Dansville NY (and no longer living in Greenfield, MA) while at the same time showing a Chancy Strickland (b/w 26 and 44 yrs of age) and an Obid Strickland (b/w 16 and 25 years of age) each living by themselves separately in Dansville.Since Chancy and Obid (I) showed up in Dansville the same census year as John III it is quite possible they were actually the younger brothers of John III (1850c, 1860c, and 1870c have Chancy born at 1798, 1794, and 1792 respectively and though Obid (I) is never heard of again we know he was born b/w 1795 and 1804). If Obid was born prior to John II death in 1802 then he certainly can be, along with Chancy, John II son or the younger brother of John III. This would also explain the 1816 date of Randolph and Obed F’s. father into Dansville, NY.
One has to assume that the 1820c. Obid was the father of Randolph (b. Feb, 23, 1823) and Obed F (b. April 3, 1833)Randolph documentation mentions that Randolph’s mother died when he was 12 (abt 1835).This would explain why Obed F appears in 1850c at age 17 living with non-relatives (John. W. Stone family, Randolph had already left for MI in 1844).Incidentally, after Chancy’s wife Mary dies in 1852 (buried in Dansville Cemetery), and all his children moved away or die (Miles d.1853 and was also buried in Dansville Cemetery) and after Obed F. moved to MI we find Chancy in the 1860c now also living with the John W. Stone family in Sebewa Ionia MI! Since both Obed F. and Chancy (likely uncle) ultimately end up living at different times with the John W. Stone family this is further evidence of a familial relationship between Obed F. and Chancy. So ultimately both the surviving Strickland brothers (John III and Chancy) along with the children of Obid (I), Randolph and Obed Frank, made it to MI and lived close to one another.
The “Massachusetts Soldiers & Sailors of the Revolutionary War” mentions only 15 Stricklands (including derivatives) with only two “Johns”.One is a Jonathan, roll dated North Castle, and the other is a John, roll dated Granville (Ruth and perhaps John’s home town).Unfortunately, neither of these two entries mentioned the soldier’s hometown but when we (my father, son, and self) took a two hour road trip to visit the Log Plain Cemetery in Greenfield, MA the other day, John Jr (II)’s stone was adorned with the 1776 Revolutionary War veteran marker and flag. The local veteran’s office is closed until August 1st so I hope to get more details as to how they know that that John Strickland is a Revolutionary War Vet.. So, if Obid (I) was one of John Jr’s last children born before his death in 1802 then it is true that Randolph and Obed Frank’s grandfather was a Revolutionary War soldier named John!
I am most likely a descendant of the John Strickland line… Son of Raymond C Strickland (CT & NY), son of Claude Edgar (CT, NY, PA, MI), son of Edgar D (MI), son of George Henry (MI), son of Joel B (MI), son of either John III or Capt David Jr (MI, NY, MA), son of John II or David (MA), son of John I (MA, ?), son of ????Are you a descendent of Randolph or Obed F? If so, I it looks probable that we are about 6th cousins?
I would be interested in any more information related to John Strickland I’s line (who resided in Greenfield, MA in at least the late 1700;s and died there in 1814).. Given the close proximity of my apparent MA relatives in the 1700’s I wouldn’t be surprised if ultimately my search leads me back to my home state of CT. Please feel free to call and compare notes.
Thanks
Doug Strickland, Monroe CT, (203) 268-1904
