First Thanksgiving Important To The Stricklands
Hi Stricklands, According to the genealogist, the Stricklands played an important part in the 1608 Thanksgiving. On Matthew Strickland's wife Ann Braswell Strickland's side, Richard Braswell, was the Rector of the first (English) speaking church in the New World, called St. Lukes Church near Smithfield, Virginia. The first church was the (Spanish) mission in St. Augustine, Florida. The first Thanksgiving in 1608, was led by Captain John Woodlief. Captain Woodlief was the father-in-law of Richard Pace that was married to Sarah Woodlief in 1652,and he was Captain of the Margaret. The first Richard Pace helped save Jamestown from the Indians in 1622. He was Amy Pace Strickland's great-great-grandfather. She was married to Solomon Strickland our ancestor. We have alot to be proud of this Thanksgiving. Just thought I would let you know. Love your cousin Cheryl E.
