JOHN STRICKLAND b. 1801 GA-d. Gordon Co.
Can anyone connect with John Strickland who was born abt. 1801 in GA and was married to Susan (Susannah)?I haven't been on the Strickland GenForum for a while and my search feature isn't working.I posted message May 25, 2000 and received replies but I am unable to locate these messages to post the message numbers.John is my gggg-grandfather.He resided in Hall Co., Chatooga Co. and Gordon Co., GA.Family members say he was a Methodist minister and served in the Civil War as a chaplain. In the Roster of Confederate Soldiers of Georgia 1861-1865, there is a John Strickland who enlisted 4 March 1862 as a Chaplain in S Co. 40th Inf. Reg. and died on 31 December, 1862 (Died at home). He enlisted in Gordon County.
There is a notice in the "Southern Christian Advocate, 1867-1878," Death and Obituary Notices;Issue of June 18, 1969 which states:Mrs. Susannah Strickland, widow of the Rev. John Strickland, who died a few years ago, died in Gordon Co., Ga.,April 20, 1869, aged 70 years.
1850 Chatooga Co. Census:
John Strickland48GA
Susan48NC
Elizabeth 18
Irvin 17
Sanford15
Mary 13
William 11
My family descends as follows:John (Methodist minister), Sanford (Thomas Sanford) (Methodist minister)>Henry Sanford (Methodist minister)>Leotis Strickland [definitely not a Methodist minister]>my mother.Census info on Thomas Sanford:
1870 Gordon Co. Census:
Strickland, Thomas S., w/m age 35; farmer; born GA
, Lucinda C., w/f age 27; born GA[Note:Lucinda is daughter of John Ellis of Gordon County, GA)
, John E., w/m age 4; born GA
, Julia F.C., w/f age 4/12; born GA
1880 Gordon Co., Census:
Strickland, Thomas S., w/m age 45; farmer, born GA
, Lucinda C., w/f age 37; wife; born GA
, John E., w/m age [?]; son; born GA
, Julia F.C., w/f age 12; daughter; born GA
, Sarah A, w/f age 9; daughter; born GA
, William F., w/m age 6; son; born GA
Note:There is a Thomas and William Strickland in the household of a John Strickland (age 33) in the 1860 Gordon County Census and although the ages for Thomas and William match, the John in this household is too young to be Thomas Sanford's father (may be a relative or may be the the wrong Thomas and William altogether).
Thomas and Lucinda Caroline had a daughter, Laura, who is not listed on either Census.Thomas Sanford was born Jan. 1835 probably in Hall Co., GA.Lived in Chatooga and Gordon Counties.Served in Civil War (S Co. 40th Inf. Reg. GA - Pvt) and I find conflicting information.I have found info which states he deserted at the Battle of Resaca and another source states he took the Oath of Allegiance, was sent to Ohio until the war was over and then was sent back to Georgia.I don't know which is correct. He was a Methodist minister. He moved to Texas some time after 1880 to Poetry (near Terrell in East Texas), Kaufman County and d. Feb. 1898.He is buried at the Dry Creek Cemetery at Poetry.Julia Frances C. Strickland is buried at Dry Creek Cemetery and Laura is buried in the cemetery in Terrell.Laura and Julia F.C. both married into a family named Williams (possibly brothers).
Thomas Sanford's son, John E., remained in Georgia. He was born 1866 and died 1934 and is buried at Mt. Pleasant Methodist Church Cemetery at Red Bud, Gordon Co.He married Lola Borders 3 Jan 1894 and had children Edmund L. b. 1895, Lola b. 1898, Frank T. b. 1899 and one other male.My g-grandfather, Henry Sanford, was very close to this family and made numerous trips to Calhoun to visit "Ed and Frank" and my great aunt (Laura Pearl Strickland Cason) remembers taking trips in a Model T to visit relatives in both Georgia and North Carolina when she was a child. She was b. 1909 and died 1999.This was back in the 1910s, '20s and '30s.So my Strickland family from East Texas does have this link to this particular Strickland family in Georgia.I do not know what happened to Thomas Sanford's remaining children, William F., Lucinda Caroline or Sarah A, except that William moved to Texas.
My mother said her g-grandfather (Henry Sanford) received a visitor who was involved in the Wilson Strickland matter. My mother was present when this gentleman came to Henry's home.My g-grandfather said he was related to Wilson Strickland but said he could probably never legally prove it, so that matter was dropped.I don't know a lot about the Wilson Strickland lawsuit but I am very interested in finding the parents and relatives of the John Strickland who was b. around 1801 in GA.This paragraph is a just a bit of oral history passed down.
I received an email which stated my gggg-gfather John Strickland had a brother (or half brother), Lazarus, and also had brothers Wilson and Andrew Jackson and two sisters, Hannah and Priscilla, with parents possibly being Sion Strickland and Elizabeth Black, but not proved.
Also, I have read that Strickland families turned their bibles over to attorneys during the Wilson Strickland matter and so many bibles just disappeared. Why can't they get these bibles back? Were they destroyed or can Strickland families find out who still has them and litigate to retrieve them. They should at least be able to get their bibles back.It just seems that since DNA testing can now be done to prove or exclude relationships, withholding family bibles with genealogy entries is an outdated tactic.I guess I don't know all the facts.
This is about all the information (verifiable, unverifiable and oral) that I've been able to accumulate on my Strickland NC/Georgia/TX ancestors.I hope someone will reply.I posted a long message but I wanted to list more names and information than I had in my May 2000 post in the hope this info might connect with someone. Thanks for letting me post on GenForum.
