This early document from the Augusta County Circuit Court, situated in Staunton, Va., has literally stopped aging. The high rag content of some paper stock at the time gave it a lifespan the paper we produce today will never be able to come close to. Dated Dec. 23, 1816, this document provides for the care of an orphan, and is signed by Erasmus Stribling, clerk of the court who also served as mayor of Staunton in 1816 and 1818.
Top edge has a couple of small nicks in it, and bottom right edge appears to have a piece of clear tape on it. Otherwise, this document, which measures 7 x 10 inches, is in remarkably good condition to be 187 years old.
