The only thing I can help you with is that the Strear, Streer, Streair, Strair etc. spelling do appear frequently on early American censuses of the Pennsylvania Strayer family, which was generally Stroeher or Streher or Straeher in German. The bulk of the family were originally in York County and northern Lancaster (which became Lebanon County)... but migrated north up the Susquehanna River into Dauphin and then various other counties.Even as early as 1790 and 1800, one branch lived in Cumberland County.Cumberland County (county seat Carlisle) is north of York County and west (across the River) from Dauphin County (Harrisburg).Unfortunately, the Cumberland County family is something of a mystery to me.I cannot give you specifics as to a William who might have migrated from there to Australia.Seems a bit of a stretch, but then gold fever drew people some incredible distances at various times.I have no knowledge of this name being in County Cumberland in England. However, a quick check on familysearch revealed the marriage of a William "Streer" 14 APR 1835 at Saint Nicholas, in Deptford, London.
I hope this helps you somehow.
