William Streair or is it Strayer?

Maybe someone here could possibly help to shed some light on my ancestor, William Streair. The reason I post here is because I searched on Google for 'Streair' and apart from information about my William, the only other Streair that came up was Mathew Streair/Strayer from Lebanon, Co. Lancaster, PA. and that was in 1773.
On a certificate I have, William stated his birthplace as Cumberland. I assumed this was England, but maybe not so.
Is it possible that anyone here has any Strayers or Streairs who went to Australia in the 1840's? He married in Australia, and he and his wife Hannah have literally disappeared c.1875, leaving their grown chn. in Australia.
Perhaps my William is an American, and not English as I thought.
Debbie
