Your famly is clearly of German origin.
William, according to a statement given to a census taker by one of his sons was born in New Jersey.
There was a well documented Streight/Streit/family in Somerset Co in NJ which dates back to 1709 in the colonies.
Christian Streit emigrated to New Youk as an indentured servant and moved the family to "The Ramapo Tract", a German settlement in East Jersey. Later generations moved to southern NJ and scattered to other locations after that.
William and John (relationship unknown) were given Land Warrants by the Pennsylvania government as a reward for either fighting in or providing services to the Revolutionary Army of NJ.
The two men settled in Licking Creek/ Bedford County (Now part of Fulton County)
William had 15 children by two wives and he and his nine sons established a saw mill and a blacksmith business.
Forget the Welsh story...my father was of the same opinion but the family spoke German.
The Birum book is out of print.
I have a copy and helped Gerald verify some of his data when I worked for a Salt lake City based company and frequently visited the Mormon Family History Library.
