Could Maria Strachan born 1894 have been adopted

I have found the birth certificate of Maria Strachan born on 11th June 1894 at 12 West North Street Aberdeen to my grandmother Maria Strachan whose domicil was given as Milton of Auchinhove Lumphanan. This was the home of my great grandfather James Strachan.
I have checked the census of 1901 for the child but cannot find her.She is not with her mother who is in service at Roscobie Banchory and she is not at the farm with her grandfather. I have also checked for possible marriage or death reports.I have had the school records for Lumphanan checked and she was not ever registered.
Could she have been adopted or had her name changed? Would there be records of such a thing in Aberdeenshire at the time?
I do know she was still alive in 1902 when my father was born in America because of a question on his birth certificate.
It would be wonderful to know what happened to Maria.
Ruth
