Hingham MA (First Church, Unitarian) organized 1635. The meeting house, build in 1680 is the oldest
church building in America that has been used continuously for church purposes. Stowells attended this
church into the 20th Century. The settlement of Hingham MA occurred in 1635 when a large colony from
Hingham England crossed the Atlantic with the Rev. Peter Hobart among them as their pastor, and
organized the town and named it Hingham, after their old English home. In the colonial era, immigration
was done through transplantation of large affinity groups, either religious, community, or economic.
There was very little individual immigration prior to the 1840s. The colonial houses were of logs with
thatched roofs, and oiled paper for windows.Samuel was a blacksmith. As such he would have shod
horses, prepared metal work, repaired wagons, farm tools, firearms, implements. He appears to have
done well as his descendants married into prominent families in Hingham and Newton. In 1670 and 1677
he was granted land in Hingham.
