Hi, Just now spotted your post about Eleanor Dawson. She was my great-great-grandmother.Her husband was Joshua Commodore Barney. Their daughter Mary Anne Lorena Barney Stotler was my grandma's(Grandma raised me and talked about her sometimes) mother.
She was a spy for the Confederacy along with her brother,Peter Dawson .They would have parties for the Federal troops and extracted info that way.( Sounds a little like a movie of the week ,Huh?) I don't know what happened to him, but she was supposedly held by the authorities for a few days and then released.
That is correct about the fire. It was near Berkeley Springs, WV in Morgan County according to my records. She was in her 90's and still hated Yankees on December 6, 1938 when she died in that fire.
My father had a slight recollection of meeting her when he was little. He was 18 when she died. She might have made a hundred years old if it hadn't been for the accident. The thing I read about it said she was found behind the wood stove on the floor. Odds are she was trying to put it out and smoke put her down. Seems logical to me.
All I know of her personality is she was known for being very feisty and outspoken, and took no lip from anyone. Not sure of the EXACT location of St. John's Run but I will look around and see if anyone back there knows. It has been many years since I saw any of the Barney family in that area. I remember meeting a couple of teenaged cousins in the 60's at my grandma's sister Fredda's house in Berkeley Spr. referred to as "the Barney girls", but that was a long time ago. They probably don't remember me at all either. You might look up Cliff Barney who posts on here sometimes. He is pretty much an expert on that branch.
Have a great day, Ed Kidwell
