He was born February 25, 1820 in Anderson Co., SC, and died March 26, 1895 in Anderson Co., SC buried @ first Presbyterian Ch. Cem., Anderson, SC. Notes for FRANCES WINTER: "Traditions and History of Anderson County," book by Louise Ayer Vandiver, 3rd printing Jan. 1991, McNaughton & Gunn, p. 237 One of their greatest problems was getting salt. The earthen floors of old smoke houses were scraped and the dirt boiled out and strained off, then the water left, and the salt would settle at the bottom. Corn cobs were burned to make soda substitutes. Homemade molasses was used almost entirely as sweetening. Hats were manufactured from plaited straw, covered for winter with scraps of wool or silk goods if one were fortunate enough to have any. Old curtains were used, the tails of men's broadcloth coats which were too worn to be of further use as coats. Mrs. Garrison, who lived on the southeast corner of Main and Church streets, was the city milliner. She had tow styles, one was a "droop" the other a "boulevard." The droop was a hat with a wide brim strapped down with ribbon or pieces of silk from old dresses. The boulevard was a small round hat that turned over the head like a soup plate and was usually trimmed with palmetto rosettes. Pins and needles were scarce, and carefully treasured. Shoe blackening was made from elderberries cooked and strained with a little molasses stirred into it..... Children of FRANCES WINTER and HENRY GARRISON are: i. CHARLES5 GARRISON, b. July 10, 1844, Anderson Co., SC; d. 1860, Anderson Co., SC. ii. FRANCES CLEMENTINE GARRISON, b. July 16, 1862; d. November 05, 1917, Anderson Co., SC buried @ Silver Brook Cem., Anderson, SC; m. HARPER W. TUCKER. Notes for FRANCES CLEMENTINE GARRISON: Adopted child. Parents of Clementine are unknown. "Traditions and History of Anderson County" by Louise Ayer Vandiver. An Anderson born woman, who was once pupil of General Ayer, dying without children, and having a considerable property, left a large bequest to be used for the education of girls. The Horton brothers of Atlanta, themselves Anderson born and bred, are trustees of the fund. Anderson College was not in existence when Mrs. Frances Clementine Tucker, in her girlhood Clementine Garrison, made her will, consequently it does not appear in the list of those selected by her for her beneficiaries. They are: Lander College, Piedmont College, of Demorest, GA, Young Harris College, GA, Martha Berry School, and the Georgia normal and Industrial School, of Athen, GA. Mrs. Tucker was the adopted daughter of Henry Garrison and her girlhood home stood on the corner of South Main and Church streets (Anderson). 14. JAMES COOK4 WINTER, SR.
