William Clay Stoneman, Missouri and NY state -1848-1930

William Clay Stoneman was my great grandfather and he lived his adult life near Springfield, Missouri. He lived his childhood in or near Rochester, NY, supposedly with a grandmother and two bachelor uncles. We are uncertain where he was born, but it may have been Mexico City since he mother was supposedly Spanish and at least two censuses list that as his birthplace. His most likely birthday was March 10, 1848. He told his family his father was General George Stoneman (Civil War). I have been unable to find him in any of the U.S. censuses as a child. He is not listed as living with any of the Stoneman family. Does anyone know anything about who he lived with as a child or even for sure where he was born? There are conflicting census reports related to that although virtually all of them say he father was born in New York, where General George was born. I would appreciate hearing from anyone regarding this. Thank you.
