SAMUEL STONE, CASS CO, MO, TO OR IN 1853
Found in my OREGON HISTORY files, a clipping from the OREGONIAN, (Portland, OR) dated 15 Nov 1967, headlined GRANDMA STONE QUILTS RELATE HISTORY. The article reads in part: "Born ZERELDA CARPENTER Sept. 25, 1822 in Cass County, Mo., she married JOHN BONES in 1844. Two children were born to them before she was left a widow just four years after her marriage. She married SAMUEL STONE three days before Christmas in 1851 and three children were born of that marriage. Two died in infancy. In 1853, the Stones crossed the plains for Oregon and Grandma STONE made her lifelong home in Buell. A member of the Christian Church, she was one of the fourteen members who organized the Christian Church in Sheridan (OR) in 1854. Known for her kindly deeds, she provided a home for 11 motherless children in her lifetime. The quilts she so generously stitched...have been gathered and donated to the Oregon Historical Society...."
Picture of Grandma STONE and her quilts are included in the article. I'll be happy to send a copy of this clipping to anyone who is interested.
