Father of Capt. John Stone is Who
For the longest time I have sought my fifth great maternal
great grandfather's origin and his father. I have explored avenues and possibilities that, could have, may have, and thought to have been his lineage. I have sought his line through Governor William Stone by means of the Hatton name that came to light in both my line and Gov. W. Stone's line, but, it was not to be as evidence indicates. Again I went with using possible middle names and dates, such as, William, and associating them with factual dates of my line and other possible names, such as Green, which occur
in the line of William Stone and Elizabeth Dennett. Again after a diligent study it proves not to be so. DNA studies and evidence ties William Stone, Sr., great grandchildren into the haplogroup with such Stone's as, Eusebious, and George Washington Stone. Eusebious Stone was a son of John and Mary O"Brissell Stone of Caroline County, Virginia.
My research of his childrens first names compare favorably with those in my direct line but it also matches several other Stone lines as well in comparng usage of first names.
My next tool of research was to use practical judgement and documented proof of dates to eliminate certain John Stones that existed by finding and using more documented proof about their personal lives that could disqualify them from my research by time and circumstance.
My Capt. John Stone based on the dates of his first born son, Jonathan Stone, born on July 04, 1755 in Halifax County, North Carolina, had to be in living in Edgecombe County by Jonathan's birthdate. What would become Halifax County was actually Edgecombe at the time of Jonathan and his sister Mary's birth. Halifax was formed in 1759. Capt. John and his probable first wife, Alice Hurst, lived on Fishing Creek on or near the Roanoke River in Edgecombe County. How much earlier can Capt. John Stone be placed in
that area is the question? If anyone has information that could help me here it would be much appreciated as I try to
piece together and close out one line of North Carolina Stone's.. I have a John Stone of Chowan County, NC., that sold land on Rockyhock Creek to William Morgan in 1730. Edgecombe County came from Chowan County via Bertie County.
I also have a John Stone who in 1786 purchased 200 acres of land from Joseph Sumner on the north bank of Little Swamp in Edgecombe County. I have a John and Ann Stone who witnessed a transaction for James Allan in 1733 Edgecombe County Court. Yet Edgecombe County was still a part of Chowan County. Then I have John Stone married to Pegee Merritt prior to January 3, 1757 in Edgecombe County. To what extent if any are these John Stone's related or are they one John Stone? Very little information can be found on them. Any documented help appreciated!!!
