My father's grandfather was a man named John Wesley Stone who was living in Little River, Arkansas in the 1900 Federal Census. This is actually the only record I have ever been able to find that I know is definitely him.
So...here is what I know. The 1900 census record reports him as having been born Oct 1847 in Arkansas. His father was born in TN and his mother also in Arkansas. Social Security applications for his oldest daughter Fannie and my grandfather John Franklin Stone both state that his full name was John Wesley Stone.
I have a letter from Fannie to my grandmother stating that her father died when he was 55 of pneumonia. I also know that his wife (Sarah Elizabeth Case....known as Bettie) remarried in 1906. (I have a copy of this marriage certificate.) So, I assume John died between 1903 and 1906.
I found a marriage record for a J.W. Stone and Bettie Case in Hunt County, Texas in 1883 but am not sure if these are my great-grandparents. It is the correct year according to the previously mentioned 1900 census.
Two of John & Bettie's children were born in Tyler, Texas. The rest were born in either Indian Territory or Bowie County, Texas. I also know that my great-grandmother Bettie lived mostly in Jackson County, Oklahoma until she died (date unknown).
So why look for a connection with Lemuel Stone and/or George Washington Stone (of Rusk, TX)? Because my father's DNA and descendents of these two families is an identical match in all 67 markers. (We are all part of the Stone Group on the Family Tree DNA website.) This connection hasn't been of much assistance to me yet, but I am still hoping for a breathrough.
If you look here Ancestry.com you are going to find several trees that claim Calvin C Stone (husband of America Green) is John Wesley's father. These people (including the Gibson tree) all copied my tree several years ago when I was speculating about this connection. I have since learned my lesson so any theories I may have are kept on private trees.
I still think it is a viable theory however. Calvin had a son named John W Stone who was born about the right time. Calvin was born in TN and America was born in Arkansas. I can prove Calvin C Stone was the son of William Stone (born 1792 in NC) and Sarah Huddleston (born in TN). This William Stone migrated through Tennesse and Kentucky to his home in Pike County, Arkansas where he eventually died. Could he possibly be the brother of Lemuel Stone or perhaps George Washington Stone or both?
btw....One other thing....My father has a memory of his Dad (John Franklin Stone) saying that his own father (John Wesley Stone) "had two families." My father's recollection is vague so who knows what this means for certain or if it is even true.
Thank you in advance for any assistance or ideas you might have regarding my "Stone wall."
