Capt. John Stone of Edgecombe-Halifax and Franklin Counties North Carolina
Evidence has been found that could be of help to those who are seeking members of Capt. John Stone and his sons,
Jonathan, John, William Sr., Merritt Stone and daughters;
Mary and Elizabeth Stone. To understand this new finding is
to know the formation of the counties that this branch of the Stone family lived in. Evidence pointed to the fact
that in Haifax and surrounding counties there was only one
Stone family in the area. That family was Capt. John Stone
and his sons. After moving from Halifax County about 1778
to the newly formed Franklin County, nothing more is found
of Capt. John Stone. Now, Edgecombe county was formed from
Bertie County and from Edgecombe County came Bute and Halifax County. Bute County would be dissolved and Franklin
County and Warren County were formed from Bute. All of these counties were in what was known as the Halifax District. When doing my research I went back to the time of
the first United States Population Census of 1790 of Frank-
lin and Halifax County. I found no Stone family members of
any branch in Halifax County. In Franklin I found three Stone family members that were heads of households. They
were the brothers; Jonathan, John, and William Sr.,. There
was no mention of Merritt Stone. The earliest records I
could find in Halifax County involving John Stone also to
be known as Capt. John Stone was 1764. I found later that
John Stone was a witness to several eed transactions in
1750 and after that date. As I learned the formation of the counties I went back to Edgecombe County in the Halifax
District, using the Census of 1790 and found a John Stone
living there as head of household. As I searched back in
"Will" of Halifax and Franklin County I found a John Stone
that was the husband of Pegee Merritt and the son-in-law of
John Merritt. John Merritt's "Will" was written on January
13th. 1757 and probated in November 1757 Halifax County,
Court. As I searched the "Wills" of old Edgecombe County
hoping to find out who the father of Capt. John Stone might
be and if he lived at all in North Carolina, I found listed
as a witness to James Allen's "Will" was one Anne Stone
and John Stone. The date was December 04th. 1733.... Capt.
John Stone's oldest child was Jonathan Stone born February
25 or 28th. 1755. The difference in years of John Stone of
1733 and birth of Jonathan was 22 years. It is without doubt that John Stone who witnessed the "will" of James
Allen was at least of age to be a witness in 1733 which means he would most likely have been 18 to 21 years old when he witnessed the "Will". This means it is possible he could have been as young as 40 years old when Jonathan was
born or as old as 43 years or more. Could this be the father of Capt. John Stone or could this even be Capt. John Stone? Need some active researchers to take this and run with it. I would if I were able to travel. Thanks and heres hoping we can identify this Stone member.
