I have a question for those researchers that have knowledge
of the family line of George Stone, immigrant to Jamestown
(James City) Colony, Va.(abt. 1620)and his said son,Lt.Col.
John Stone, who became High Sheriff of Rappahannock Co.,Va.
at about the age of 72 years on May 12, 1692 through 1697.
His said son, (Capt.) William Stone, who married a Sarah
(last name unknown)that lived on Totuskey Creek in old
Rappahannock Co., Va. and died and buried there. Their son
William that helped Sarah find his father, William's "lost
will", before young William Stone, the son, moved to Amelia
Co., Va., where he married Elizabeth Dennett. Young William
and what I understand to be his second wife, Elizabeth
Dennett died in 1717 after giving birth to three of the
ten children that are said to be born to young William.
He named his last child born in 1734, William also. Some
say this baby son married a Mary Green thought to be his
older sister, Lucy Stone's sister-in-law being that Lucy
married a Henry Green(Greene).
I am interested in knowing who the wives were of these
men. My research has it listed being in this manor;
George Stone and Mary Vernon....
Lt. Col. John Stone and 1st. Mary (Nelson??)- 2nd. Sarah
(Capt.) William Stone and Sarah (Howard??)....
William Stone and 1st. Elizabeth Dennett- 2nd. possibly
Elizabeth Roberson-Stone ????.....
William Stone and (not married to-Mary Green)she appears
to have had a child by William out of wedlock...1st. wife
in North Carolina, Bute Co., Alicia "Alice" Hurst...2nd.
wife, Pegee Margaret Merritt of Halifax-Bute Co., then
they moved to Franklin Co., NC., about 1775/79.
William the son of William and Elizabeth of Amelia Co.,
Va., was given the full name John William Stone and later
after fleeing into North Carolina with his illigitimate
son, William Green, started using the name John and was
eventually called Capt. John Stone. It appears that he
arrived in Bute Co., NC., about 1750/52 from Amelia Co.,
Other than William Green, he fathered two daughters and
four other sons. They were all born in Bute-Halifax Co.,
starting with Jonathan Stone, 1755; Mary Stone,1757, then
by his second wife, Pegee (Peggy) Merritt, John Stone,1760
Elizabeth Stone, 1761, then John William Stone. Jr., 1763,
and finally, Merritt Stone,1765.
John Stone would have ten children of which one was named
Samuel Hatton Stone. The name Hatton appears only one
other time in the Early Stone records and that is in the
line of Gov. William Stone and Verlinda Graves. They had
a grandson by their son, Thomas Stone, that was named
William that married Theodosia Wade-Stone. Theodosia's
mother was Mary Wade but her maiden name was Hatton. I
thought surily that Samuel Hatton Stone was named on
behalf of Mary Hatton-Wade. If anyone has any information
that would bring about new evidence that I do not have
in establishing this line as such please let me know. As
I said, my original belief was that we were from Gov.
William Stone but new evidence has changed my thought
and belief to it being that of George Stone and his line.
Any help or thoughts on this would be appreciated.
