Further research on the family of Captain John Stone reveals a second marriage. No Will for Captain Stone has been found so the members of his family have been reconstructed from available records.
The Will of John Hurst, Isle of Wight County, Virginia, dated 1 January 1727, proven 16 February 1727, names his wife, Mary; his sons, James, William, John, Phillip and Walter; daughters, Alice and Mary.
The Will of Phillip Hurst of Halifax County, dated 4 February 1769, proves the two oldest children of Captain John and Alicia/Alice Stone. In his will, Phillip Hurst names his nephew, Jonathan Stone, and his niece, Mary Stone, the children of John Stone. This indicates that Alicia/Alice is dead.Birth dates of two of Captain Stone’s sons, John, b. 1760, and William, b. 1763,indicate that they were born before 1769 which questions why they were not named by Phillip Hurst. The explanation probably lies in the fact that they were not children by his sister, but were children by a second wife of Captain Stone.
The second wife of Captain John Stone is believed to be Margaret (Pegee) Merritt. The Will of John Merritt, of Edgecombe County, North Carolina, dated 13 January 1757, lists wife and Executor, Mary; sons, Thomas and John; daughters, Pegee, wife of John Stone, Amee, wife of William Hanby and Betty Merritt. This indicates that John Stone and Pegee Merritt Stone were married by 1757, confirming that sons, John and William were the children of John and Pegee (Peggy) Stone.
Merritt Stone, b. c1765, is probably another son of Captain John and Pegee (Peggy) Stone.Further research should reveal the daughters, if any, of the couple.
A red flag should be put on the first name of the female Hurst who married Captain John Stone. No records have been found that prove the given name of his first wife.It has been widely believed that her name was Alice/Alicia, however it could well be Mary the other daughter of John and Mary Hurst. We do know that the one of the daughters of John and Mary Hurst married a Green since Phillip Hurst named the daughter's son, William Green,in his Will.
