Need proof of Grace Gail Stockwell's place of death

Grace Gail Stockwell (might be listed as Gail Stockwell) is said to have died October 12, 1948 probably in UPSTATE NEW YORK according to a letter written to her family in California by one of Grace's friends on the East Coast. After 20 years of research I have not been able to prove this and the person who wrote the family the letter in 1948 could not be located to get other information on the death and to find out where Grace Gail Stockwell was buried. (I have the name of the person who wrote the letter and other information from the letter.)A small fortune has been spent on ordering death certificates and other records with no results. New York state, and all of the boroughs in New York says there is no record of her death. Grace Gail Stockwell wrote several books that was published under Gail Stockwell. Grace Gail Stockwell worked for McCalls magazine for several years in New York. One of her best friends there was named Mary Davis Gillies Johnson. After McCalls folded Mary Davis Gillies (Johnson)retired to Washington State and died there in the early 1900s. Grace Gail Stockwell, at one time, owned land in New Jersey. It was sold to Mary Davis Gillies. New Jersey does not have record of Grace Gail Stockwell's death. Can anyone give me suggestions or does someone researching the Stockwell families help me? Thanks. Bobbie Cardin
