Charlotte,

Your ancestor, Nancy Jane Stockton, married Zachary Taylor Tuggle in about 1876. Nancy Jane was Zachary's second wife. Zachary’s first wife was also named Nancy. She appears to have been Nancy Burnett. The parents of Nancy Jane Stockton were Thomas 5 and Mary (nee Pierce) Stockton. Thomas and Mary (nee Pierce) Stockton owned property on Smith Creek in Stockton’s Valley, present Clinton County, Kentucky.

Thomas 5 Stockton was one of the three Thomas Stocktons who lived in Stockton's Valley in the early 1800’s. The eldest of these three was Thomas 3 Stockton, Sr., who was born about 1740. He is thought to have been the first white settler in what would later become Clinton County, Kentucky. Thomas 3 Stockton, Sr., settled there in about 1795, and Stockton's Valley is named after him. Stockton’s Valley was part of Cumberland County, Kentucky until 1836 when Clinton County was formed. Thomas 3 Stockton, Sr., had earlier lived on the north side of the French Broad River in what is present Sevier County, Tennessee.

His son, Thomas 4 Stockton, Jr., was born about 1765 to 1775. They both moved to Stockton's Valley in the 1790's. Cumberland County deed records prove that Thomas 4 Stockton, Jr., was married to a Sally, but her last name is not known. It appears that Thomas 4 Stockton, Jr., moved from Stockton's Valley, Kentucky, to Roane County, Tennessee, before 1820. He then appears to have returned to Stockton's Valley by the 1840 census where a Thomas Stockton, age 60-70, is shown living there. On the same census page, just 7 names away, is your Thomas 5 Stockton, age 40-50.

The youngest of these three Thomas Stocktons was your Thomas 5 Stockton, who was born about 1792. He was a son of "Smith Creek" John 4 Stockton. Deed records show that "Smith Creek" John 4 Stockton owned 200 acres on Smith Creek in Stockton’s Valley. This was the 200 acre property that was sold on May 30, 1825. The deed stated that Thomas Stockton was one of the heirs of John Stockton and that the property was on “Smiths Creek.”

The Cumberland County, Kentucky, 1799 Tax List shows property owners Thomas Stockton, Sr., Thomas Stockton, Jr., Nathaniel Stockton, and John Stockton. Your ancestor, "Smith Creek" John 4 Stockton, lived just three properties away from Thomas 3 Stockton, Sr., and Nathaniel 4 Stockton. He was also just one property away from Thomas 4 Stockton, Jr. By the 1820’s Thomas 5 Stockton owned property on Smith Creek just a little upstream of where his father "Smith Creek" John 4 Stockton had lived.

Before Thomas 5 Stockton married Mary Pierce, he was married to Christina Groce. Both Thomas 5 and Mary (nee Pierce) Stockton can be found on the 1850 and 1860 census in Clinton County, Kentucky. In the 1860 census your ancestor, Nancy Jane Stockton, is shown as Nancy J. Stockton, age 4, born in Kentucky.
