A biography/family history of Winfield S. Stocking is included in "Montana, Its Story & Biography", Vol 2, page 586

Winfield Scott Stocking was born, 14 Mar 1837, to Jared & Lucy (Bigelow) Stocking, b. natives of Pennsylvania & New York, respectively. Jared died in Chicago at age 60. Lucy lived to age 90.

Winfield, one of ten children, was educated in Grand Rapids, MI. In 1859, he and his brother, Jerome, went to San Francisco, CA, and engaged in mining. In 1862, went to Oregon where his party discovered the John Day Mines. 1863, located to Rocky Bar, ID. On 17 Jan 1864, Boise City, ID, Winfield married Miss Margaret Henry Uhle, a native of Louisville, KY. They traveled to Bannack, MT, where Winfield engaged in mining. In 1865, the family moved to Fort Benton, MT, where Winfield opened the first ranch in Choteau County, MT in 1867; was in the retail meat business and proprietor of the Benton Hotel for 5 years, and in 1883 opened the first Opera House in Fort Benton.

Stocking children: Katherine Lou (Mrs. Albert H. Stewart) of Great Falls, MT; John J.
