Pat, Thanks for your reply. There may be a link between our families. I had a note recently from Martin Southward in South Africa, who got some of his information from Sylvia Stocker in New Zealand. (I have tried to contact her, so far without success.) Martin’s information starts from Henry Stocker, born about 1809, died 24 Dec 1880 at Boughton under the Blean, Kent. He married Sarah Radcliffe at Faversham, Kent in 1839, and divorced her in 1854 when she ran away with Mr Chatterton, the usher at the School that Henry ran. Children of Henry and Sarah were Harry, Valentine, Kate Tolson, and Edith. Henry then married Sarah Page, and their children were Fanny and Alice. The 1881 census (after Henry’s death) lists Sarah Stocker as head of Boughton House Academy, Boughton Under Blean, Kent. It also lists Fanny R Stocker (21), Alice M stocker (17), plus 16 boarders and three servants. It’s quite possible that, as you record, Henry was born in 1812. Betsy Tolson may well be the source of Kate’s second name. There is obviously some research to do, but a connection looks promising. We should keep in touch.
