born in St. Louis in 1890 - help please

I am trying to find out more information about my grandfather. His name was James Edward Moran, d.o.b. 30th March 1890 in St. Louis. He joined US Militia and US Army between 1910-1916 and the Canadian Expeditionary Forces on 15th November 1916 in Woodstock, NB - was discharged (honourably) on May 1st 1919. He died in Pittsburgh on March 27th 1965.
Of particular interest would be his US Social Security Number which would enable me to trace my ancestry via his Parents Joseph A Moran & Minnie Moran (nee Brennan?).
After marrying my grandmother and having two children he left for the US or Canada and was never heard from again.
any help would be appreciated.
I don't quite know how to find out if there was a birth certificate in St. Louis, or if there is a way of searching through an index to see if there are any likely possibles. If some kind soul in the area could look I would be very happy.

Elizabeth Jones
