His parents were James Stirrat and Catherine McDougal. William had brothers Robert, John, James, Peter and Dougal. William married Mary Orr b.June 21, 1837 in Bridge Kilbirnie Ayr Scotland. The marriage was June 11, 1858 in Bridge Kilbirnie Ayr Scotland. They came to the USA with their family and settled in Braidwood, Illinois. They are both buried in Braidwood.
