You are correct in saying that your Sam Stirrat was a plumber. I found him listed in Trow's New York City directory as a plumber in Manhattan. Your Sam is my great-great uncle.

The Stirrats came over in 1865. Sam the father was a baker in Irvine, Ayrshire, Scotland. He opened up his own bakery in Manhattan called "Stirrat's Scottish Bakery. I have a picture of Sam outside his store with 2 other men. They lived at 589 11th Ave NYC in 1880.

I have had contact with a descendant of a 3rd brother- Robert.
