Well, I've looked at the 1910, 1920, and 1930 census again and have reached a conclusion... Betty lied thru her teeth every chance she got! *GRIN!*
1910-age 21-(would mean born 1889)
1920-age 24-(would mean born 1896)
1930-age 39-(would mean born 1891) says married at 22 (means married 1913 and we know from the 1910 census she was married in 1909!)
If she was indeed married at 22 and was married in 1909 then her DOB would be 1887- which could well mean that the 1878 death date on her death certificate was indeed a typo.
Martin's dates for the same years are 1874,1874, 1873 and that closely matches his real date of 25 Sep 1875 given on his WWI draft card.
I wonder if there is anything in Martin's military file about his parents. I know he served as a private in the North Carolina Volunteers, Company H, Second Regiment in the Spanish American War.
I'll keep digging,
