Hi, I descend from Jonas Stine and his wife Elizabeth through their dau Mary 1857-1946 who m. David R Thomas 1857-1938. These were the parents of my gr-grandmother, Lulu Thomas Eves who m. Victor Eves (their dau, Bess Eves m J. Wm Ishler, these are my paternal grandparents).

I have Jonas Stine JR b 6/18/1818 (a yr different than yours) and same death date as you. I thought I copied these dates fr the tombstones in Gray's Cemetery in Stormstown. So, I don't know who is correct. I could have miscopied.

This Jonas JR married Elizabeth Meyers. I have her as the d/o William "Myers" of Patton Twp (I have no dates) and Susan (I have no maiden name). Susan was age 76 in 1850. they m. 12 Mar 1841. If anyone has information about this couple (Wm and Susan Meyers/Myers, please chip in and help me....there are 2-tons of Meyers/Myers in Centre Co and I've been in this "soup" for 20 yrs trying to figure them out).

Jonas JR was b. in Centre Co, s/o Jonas Stine Sr b. 1780 Dec in Lancaster Co PA, and d. 1858 in Centre Co PA I don't know where he and his brother, Samuel, came from, but they both came to Centre Co at the same time. I ran into one old source (a typewritten source out of another family branch, from the 1930's) that said they had immigrated from Southern Holland. That doesn't mean necessarily that they are Dutch, since Germans (as most others think they are) went to many different ports to migrate. However, for what it's worth, when I "google in" the name "Jonas Stine" I do come up with some international sites where someone from Europe has posted genealogical information, just like we do here, and it's always in Dutch or DANISH. Also, my dad's oral history (esp. at Christmas time when the family customs are wheeled out) said that he had a "Dutch" great-grandparent.

Jonas Stine Sr. was m. to Elizabeth Gray 1794-14Aug1858. She was of the Gray family for which Gray's Church and Gray's Cemetery is named in Stormstown PA. Her parents, John Gray 1767 and Catharine Hartsock 1775-1847, were both born in what is now Hagerstown Maryland. They married in Zion German Reformed Church there, the first church built in that area, by founder Jonathan Hager. Do you need more information on this Gray/Hartsock line? It occurs to me that, if you are reasearching Centre Co. names, and you are now hooked up to the Gray line, you might already have this info, as it was an important surname to that area. Yours, Vicki Ishler Matthews
