Here is what I have found out...
Evaline (Evalina, Eveline, Evoline) McDonald Carlyle (Carlisle, Carlile) Miller
When I first saw her name in the 1870 census for LaPorte Co., Indiana, I was looking for the parents of Jacob Edgar Miller born February 1870. (I also found her marriage record to Isaac Miller the same day with a date of 17 June 1866 in La Porte Co., IN and she was listed as Evaline Carlyle.)
Here is the info I found:
La Porte Co., IN
Isaac S. Miller age 33 Farmer b. Ohio
Evaline Miller age 33 b. Virginia
Laura? Lauren? Miller age 11 b. Indiana
Marshal S. Miller age 3 b. Indiana
Eva May Miller age 2 b. Indiana
Jacob Miller age 6/12 born February b. Indiana
Joseph Miller age 38 Farm Laborer b. Ohio
RIGHT NEXT DOOR is the Landon Carlyle Household listing the following:
Landon Carlyle age 68 Farmer b. Virginia
William Stickley age 28 b. OH
Margaret E. Stickley age 26 b. OH
Christina Stickley age 6 b. IN
Marry (SIC) E Stickley age 3 b. IN
Nancy A. Stickley age 1 b. IN
Rabecca Carlyle age 24 b. OH
Evaline and Isaac were married in 1866 so Laura? Lauren? and Marshal S. Miller had a different mother?
Well, I thot my search had ended on finding Evaline's parents. Landon Carlyle and Nancy McDonald were them.
I looked up on Landon Carlyle on the 1840 VA census and found him in Hampshire Co., VA. I wanted to start collecting all the census’ I could that had Evaline on them proving her existence. She was 33 in 1870 so that means she was born ca. 1837 in VA. It seemed the more I tried to prove her, the less I really knew about her.
Landon Carlyle showed the following in his household:
1 Male under 5 (This must be John W.?)
1 Male age 5-10 (Don’t know this son’s name or could be small relative?)
1 Male age 30-40 (This must be Landon, he would be 38)
1 Female age 20-30 (This must be Nancy McDonald, she would have been 27)
Now why isn’t there a Female under 5 listed...that is how old Evaline would have been in 1840.
So I looked up the 1850 census in Champaign Co., OH Salem twp. and found Landon and Family listed as such:
Landan Carlisle age 48 b. VA
Nancy Carlisle age 37 b. VA
John Carlisle age 13 b. VA
Sarah Carlisle age 9 b. VA
Ellen Carlisle age 7 b. OH
Newton Carlisle age 3 b. OH
First thing I notice is that there is not a male age 15 - 20 in this family...either a child passed away or was as I said above, a relative? Second thing missing is Evaline Carlyle, Still....why wasn’t she listed with this family?
So, I started searching for Evaline Carlyle elsewhere. Why did the Evaline Carlyle who married Isaac Miller live right next door to a man who was born in VA as she was and who had the same last name she did when marrying Isaac?
I found her name petitioning a civil war pension for John W. Carlyle....the date is hard to read but it looks like 1865 and that is the only place I could find an Evaline Carlyle in any sort of record. Then a woman by the name of _________ _________ sent me a letter called:
Memories by Mrs. Harriet E. Bierly
Story of the Arrival of Landon Carlisle to Walkerton area.
Excerpt “In the year of 1851 Mr. and Mrs. Landon Carlisle and family came from Ohio in a covered wagon and settled near Walkerton, Ind. which at that time was West York located in the vicinity where Mrs. Bertha Swank now resides” (?hm?, anyway) Mrs. Carlisle’s mother, Mrs. McDonald came with the family. The hardships of travel and living conditions was too strenuous for one of her age and she soon past (SIC) away. In a year perhaps two, Mrs. Carlisle past away leaving three small children two girls and one son John (he was killed when a horse threw and dragged him...”
This must be the John who’s wife Evaline petitioned for a civil war pension in 1865? when he was thrown and dragged by a horse. So, I started searching for marriage certificates. I found John Carlyle married Eveline McDonald on 30 Sep 1857 in La Porte Co, IN. The Evaline Carlyle who married Isaac Miller was the widow of John W. Carlyle and had the maiden name McDonald.
I started to wonder if she was related to Landon’s wife Nancy McDonald?
I found Evaline on the 1860 La Porte County census in Pleasant twp. with her husband, then, John W. Carlyle listed as follows:
John M. Carlyle age 23 Farmer b. Virginia
Evaline Carlyle age 23 b. Virginia
James McDonald age (looks like) 21 b. Virginia
Cool, James must be a brother? On the print out of the census of 1870 in La Porte Co., IN. where Isaac and Evaline lived on one side is her ex-father in law Landon, but on the other side of where they lived, two houses down, her father Jarred McDonald lived with his family they are listed as such:
Jarred McDonald age 56 Farmer b. Virginia
Anna McDonald age 55 b. Virginia
Virginia McDonald age 22 b. Virginia
Martha McDonald age 20 b. Virginia
Franklin McDonald age 17 b. Virginia
William J. McDonald age 14 b. Virginia
Ellen Miller age 4 states ‘at home’ b. Indiana (why does an Ellen Miller age 4 b. Indiana live with Jarred McDonald’s family? Isaac and Evaline were married in 1866. Exactly 4 years later in 1870 a four year old Miller is living with Evaline’s Father and Mother. Is Ellen, Jarred and Anna’s grand daughter?
So now I started looking for Evaline McDonald in 1850. I found her listed in Hampshire Co, VA age 13 listed with (it does say) Garret McDonald as such:
Garret McDonald age 37 Farmer b. VA
Ann McDonald age 37 b. VA
Samuel McDonald age 14 b. VA
Evelina McDonald age 13 b. VA
James McDonald age 11 b. VA
Margaret McDonald age 9 b. VA
Ellen McDonald age 7 b. VA
Rachael McDonald age 6 b. VA
Isabella McDonald age 5 b. VA
Virginia A. McDonald age 2 b. VA
Dorothy (10 years later listed as Martha) McDonald age 06/12 b. VA
Right next door to them, Anne’s parents Joseph and Unity Barrett are living. Listed as:
Joseph Barrett age 74 Farmer b. VA
Unity Barrett age 71 b. VA
It seems that the following children were not present in 1860: Margaret, Ellen, Rachael, Isabella either passed away or married...I haven’t found them yet. James is living with his sister Evaline and her husband John W. Carlyle in 1860.
This is about all I know of them as of this date. I still want to know if Evaline McDonald’s ex-mother in law, Nancy McDonald is related to her. The McDonalds and Carlyles both came from Hampshire Co, VA.
*Just to throw me totally off, Hampshire Co., (also called Mineral Co.?) and is listed under VA and WV depending on the document.
*Not proven - Unity Barrett’s maiden name is supposed to be Fulkamore/Vulgamore.
*Not proven - Jarred McDonald b. 25 March 1814 in VA.
*Not proven - Jarred McDonald married Anna Barrett Nov. 19, 18355 in WV.
*Not proven - Jarred McDonald died 16 May 1873 in La Porte Co., IN and another posting says Walkerton, St. Joseph Co., IN.
*Not proven - Anna Barrett McDonald b. ca. 1813 in Hampshire Co., WV
*Not proven - Anna Barrett McDonald d. 06 Sept. 1873 also posted as 1883, Walkerton, St. Joseph Co., IN. Search the 1880 census for Anna McDonald.
*Curious fact - Evaline’s mother Anna Barrett McDonald is buried in the same town that Evaline’s husband, Isaac Miller’s parents, Samuel and Sarah Miller are buried in (Walkerton, IN).
Laporte County, Indiana
