Anna. I know it's been some time since you posted your message regarding stickel and Decatur. I've just been looking over faithful copies of family documents regarding the Stickel side of the family into which my grandmother, born Mary Alice Hatch was adopted into, and lo and behold there's a bit on Decatur. So I'll pass on what I have.
Edwin C Stickel was born in Lewisberry, Penn, in Dec 1846 - a town south of Harrisburg. The notes from my grandmother say they had been living there since about the time of William Penn. Edwin's parents were Peter and Hanna Bell Stickel. He was apparently the youngest. The Stickels went out to Illinois, pioneered near Decatur, built a stone house and large barn. When this occurred I don't know, but it was early in Edwin Stickel's life as he went from there to Oberlin college in 1863 - became a minister, served with the American Missionary Assoc in the south after the civil war, ended up in Los Angeles as Wellfare Superintendent of of large department store. I also had an aunt, Alma Stickel, Edwin's natural daughter, who taught music in LA schools. As for other, related Stickels at Decature or else where, I know nother, but an very interested.
Hope this helps more than confuses.
