The last name STICKEL has been traced back to 1598 in detail by our branch of the Family Tree. The records before 1598 were destroyed in the 30 Years War, with the area subsequently becoming Lutheran. The family name STICKEL originated in Baden-Wurtenburg, in the small village of Egenhausen. Egenhausen is approximately a 45 minute drive from Stuttgart, and almost exactly opposite Baden-Baden on the other side of the mountains otherwise tracking through the Black Forest, ... so the north-easterly part of the Black Forest. The spelling STICKLE is generally accepted to be Bavarian Catholic in origination. In German, the word "stickel" means a small stick, a stake, a marker, used most frequently in marking property lines. The Russian Branch of the STICKEL tree began early 1800's when taxes were high in Germany, and many went to the Volga River Valley on a 30-year Tax Exemption begun under the rule of Catherine the Great. Most of these STICKEL's left over time, and certainly left after the Bolshevic Revolution. There have been a few big family reunions in Egenhausen. Late 80's, then again early 90's. Many from the Russian Branch as well. Lot's of different Family Trees. It was a lot of fun. There is a farm/house in Egenhausen that a STICKEL has lived in since the recorded history of the family in 1598. I have been to Egenhausen 3 times. My Dad, Edward R. Stickel, has been trying to keep our branch well updated. The first STICKEL in America from our branch, Christian Stickel, came over alone in 1865 when a teenager, and eventually became a BrewMaster in Northern NJ. Most, if not all, our family connections are through New Jersey. Other cousins came over after Christian, into the early 20th century, and again settled in NJ as best we can tell. Some of the STICKEL names from the earliest generations on record are PETER, HANS, GEORGE, MICHAEL, JOHN. As of last contact, WALTER Sr. and PHILIP are the two oldest members of the family in Egenhausen. Philip is the farmer who has the old STICKEL house.
