John was b. in Germany, immigrated to NY between 1878-83 (age 8-13). Family story says he lived with an aunt in NY; served in the Spanish-American War to gain American citizenship. John m. Barbara Garlitz (or Garletts)(poss widow)in Somerset Co, PA bef 1902. Their children were b. in Somerset, PA:

4-August Walter b. 1906, d. 1976 Marion,WV; m. Ida Margaret Wisman in Cumberland Co, MD;
their children were b. Barrackville, Marian, WV; Virginia b. 1931, m1. Mr Sutphin, m2. Mr Richardson; Sue b. 1934, m. Mr Donald.
5-Emery b. 1908, d. 1960 Cleveland, OH
6-Henry b. 1911, d. 1993
John George Steiss & wf Barbara are bur. Woodlawn Cem, Fairmont, WV.
August Walter Steiss & wf Ida are bur. Barrackville, Marion, WV. August was a coal miner (John L Lewis mines) & d. of blacklung.
