Dear Archie,
My GGrandaunt was named Mary Jane Elizabeth Stewart or Stuart. She was born, place unknown, on July 21, 1840.Her father's name was John Stuart/Stewart and her mother's name was Nancy Unknown.Family legend has them coming from North Carolina to Indiana.Legend says that they owned slaves but didnot believe in slavery so freed slaves and moved to Indiana.William Andrew Stewart born 1830 to 35, brother of Mary Jane, told his Granddaughter that we trace back to King James of Scotland (there are 6 of them).I am looking for any info on John or Nancy Stuart/Stewart.In the family Bible it is spelled Stuart but a story says that William Andrew changed the spelling.
In my searching I have come across a Jane Stewart b. Ky. age 42 in 1850 and probably her daughter Eliza Jane born in OH.,age18 in 1850.A John Stewart born 1790-1794 North Carolina, died Sparta, White Co., Tennessee. There was a W. A. Stuart in South-West Virginia who had a 15,000 acre tract on Lick Mountain. At that time Virginia and W.V. was one state so could be close to Tennessee. There are SO MANY STUART/STEWARTS!!!!About like the Jones'!!If anything sounds remotely familiar let me know at [email protected]
Doubt that I have helped but you never know.
