Gregg- Did you know that according to the state of Kentucky website, that JohnStewart was the first white settler to be killed by Indians there? Also, the Stewarts were one of the first five families to settle that region along with theBoones, Squire and his brother George (the father and uncle of Daniel).JohnStewart was shot in the left arm, shattering it, and wounding his torso as well, but he was able to outrun his pursuers and was able to evade them by hiding in a hollowed out Sycamore tree.He bled to death there and his remains were found by another settler some 7 (some accounts say 5) years later. He had on him his leather gunpowder bag, made and identified by Hannah, and his gun powder horn with the innitials "J. S." carved into it, whichDaniel identified, and he kept the latter in his possession as a momento of his friend (and brother-in- law) for the rest of his life. Daniel had been with John on a "long hunting" expedition when they were attacked by Indians (they had been kidnapped and taken prisoner by them a week earlier, but they had escaped in the dead of night and returned to their camp)-- Daniel and John ranfrom the Indians who were shooting at them, andDaniel hid in a cane thicket until dark, while John was hit by a bullet and hid in the tree hollow. You can read about the event inDaniel's own words in the"Adventures of Col. Daniel Boone "the book he wrote that made him famous. It is on the web and you can read it right there if you havn't already.--Karen
