Y-DNA TESTS ARE THE BEST PROOF OF ANCESTRY
A DNA test is the best way for a person to identify his patrilineal ancestors. The web page at http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Stuart/http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Stuart/ explains how to order a DNA test.
Many descendants of the kings and High Stewards of Scotland have already had a DNA test. Their test results and most distant known patrilineal ancestor's names, locations, dates etc. are posted at http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Stuart/default.aspx?section=yresultshttp://www.familytreedna.com/public/Stuart/default.aspx?section=yresults.
The web page athttp://www.familytreedna.com/public/Stewart/default.aspx?section=yresultshttp://www.familytreedna.com/public/Stewart/default.aspx?section=yresults shows the test results, etc. of descendants of many different Stewart families. About sixteen percent of all Scottish men surnamed Stewart descend from Walter STEWART (~1198-1246), the third High Steward of Scotland and and ancestor of the Stewart kings of Scotland.
A DNA test is all that a man needs in order to prove to which Stewart family he belongs. Y-DNA tests are for MALES only (women may test male relatives, e.g., a father or his patrilineal cousin).
Spelling of the name Stewart is a matter of personal preference. Descendants of the Stewart kings and High Stewards of Scotland spell their names in several different ways. Some do not even have the surname Stewart.
