Anna,
I have been wundering about the Watson. My thoughts were along the lines there was a strong Stewart/Watson connection.Even at this late point in time marriage was about sealing family associations and not about love.In my September email I said that one of William's daughters had married a Frank Watson and my father had a brother who was named Watson, and now we have John Watson. And on my side nobody was named Alexander or Alex, first or middle name.
On the Catholic thing, was the Catholic secondary?A lot of the Scots who went to Northern Ireland went to escape English presecution in Scotland.Because of the closeness of Northern Ireland and southwest Scotland people had been moving back and forth for centuries. The English got the Scots to oversee the Irish and the treatment of the Irish was rather harsh. In todays social light it is hard to understand but when you look at history it was a fact of life.So was John Watson's wife Irish rather than Scot/Irish?In Scotland there was friction between the protesants and the Jacobites who supported the Catholic Stewarts and there ascent to the English throne. And it has come down to modern times in the conflict between Ireland (Eire) and Northern Ireland. So it had a long dark history. But if what has been my family's black legacy all of these years is true, why do we find father and son together, if in fact everyone is one and the same.
And you are right on names.I think a book could be written just on the lexicon of names.
As you said we can only sit with our fingers crossed until the documentation comes. And the surprising thing is if we get the documentation how everything makes sense.
