According to Genealogy of Descendants William and Nancy Mayhall Stewart,
Stewart born Ireland and --- Norris from Scotland, married in Scotland
and came to America, stopped a while in Pennysylvania then to Kentucky.
Stewart was a Capt. of a Company of Indian fighters called "Stewart's Spies"
and he
founded Stewart Station in Kentucky. (There may have been a Stewart Station in
Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania.) He returned to Red Stone
Country (now Fayette County) where William and Thomas were born, then they
returned to Kentucky. Brownsville, Pennysylvania in Fayette Co. is right on
the border with Washington Co., where they have West Brownsville. Brownsville
was the location of the original "Redstone Old Fort" in 1788. It might have
been right on the
Monongahela River, the waterway that many early pioneers went from Virginia to
Pittsburgh where they picked up the Ohio River in order to float
flatboats down to Kentucky. In 1783, Fayette Co., PA was formed from
Westmoreland County. William named his first son Timothy which could have been
for his wife
Sarah's brother Timothy Mayhall. In the genealogy of the descendants of
William Stewart and Nancy Mayhall, William's brother Thomas accompanied his
father to Kentucky and Indiana, was a member of the Church of the Disciples of
Christ and he had a son named Harvey. This is all that is known of Thomas.
William never named a son after his brother Thomas, which I find strange if he
had such a brother. Disciples of Christ were Campbellits who split with the
Baptists.
According to history, about 1830, Alexander Campbell, son of a former
Presbyterian minister named Thomas Campbell who had left the church, he and
his followers, former Calvanists and Baptists, left the Baptist Church and
formed the Disciples of Christ. William kept tavern part of the time during
the war of 1812. It was a favorite place of the soldiers of that war for the
reason that one of his rules was never to charge a soldier of an American Army
for what they got.
On this account, it was not a financial success. It is also said that he was a
farmer, tailor and moccasin maker. I have not found a military record for him.
William and his family left Kentucky Apr l, 1811 for Ohio. He was delayed on
the way by his wife giving birth to a child, Malinda. They settled in Clinton
Co., Ohio May 1811 and he bought 200 Acres of land in #808, Apr 16, 1813. His
last land sale was dated Feb 19, 1827, when he and his wife and William and
Sarah (Stewart) Hardwick (their daughter), deeded their adjacent farms to John
Matthews, Book A, Pg. 301-302 of Deeds. He had also owned land in present day
Wayne Twp., Ohio. It has been said that the noted pioneer Simon Kenton
remained at his home overnight while on a trip east, either when they were
living in Kentucky or after they had gone to Ohio. William settled just west
of Yorktown, Delaware Co. Indiana where he lived until his death. There is a
deed recorded Dec 12, 1827 in Delaware Co. He may also have lived in Grant Co.
Indiana. William is buried on the Old Campbell Farm just west of Yorktown,
Indiana.
His tombstone states he was born in Pennsylvania 1771, settled in Delaware
County, Indiana 1826, died Jan 2, 1836.
