Census records are notorious for errors in where people, especially parents are born. This is especially evident when the claim different birth places for each census.

The info your uncle had fits what this person found: http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=farnskime&id=I03318

The family appears in the 1850 census as living in DeKalb Co., IL under the spelling of Abram Seward. Living with them is Vincent Breese 35 (in the index the name is Brun). Coincidentally there are several of Breese Families living in LaSalle County in 1850 who were born in NJ.

I found Abraham 46 and Ann 42 with son George in the 1860 census living in Ottawa, LaSalle Co., IL. It shows they were born in NJ.

The family moved to Chicago by 1870. Abraham is listed simply as A.Sewart. They keep butchering poor Abraham's name as in the 1880 census his name is Abaham. Their son George is living with them.

A NJ marriage record shows an Abraham Stewart and Anna Boice marrying on Aug 3, 1833 in Bergen County. It may not be your couple but then it could.

Some of these records you can look at for free at labs.familysearch.org and Ancestry.com. For those you cannot see for free I suggest checking with your local libraries to see if they have Ancestry or Heritage Quest.

The Illinois death index shows an Abraham Stewart 77 who died March 28, 1891.

I would still get George's death certificate and obit so you know you're on the right track.
