I am researching my 8th great grandfather Stephen Sisney/Sesseny, a Tory from Guilford Co, NC. Around 8 May, 1766, a group of Tories were arrested in Guilford County either before or after the Moore's Creek Battle. Lieut. Kenneth Stuart was among those arrested along with Stephen Sisney and taken to Frederick Town in Maryland. Others that were with this group were Capt. William Garner, Aaron Vardie, Capt. Lymon York, Samuel Devenny (Deviney), Frederick Croft, Capt. John Piles, John Piles Jr., Ensign Thomas Brawford (Bradford), Capt. David Jackson, Capt. Robinson York, and Capt. Alex McCraw.
On the 23 September 1776 several of these men "broke Goal at Frederick Town. Kenneth Stuart (Sewart) and my grandfather being two of the escapees. Kenneth was described as a Scotchman well made about five feet nine inches high, wears a long hunting shirt with pockets in the sides of it, a pair of leather breeches, white stockings, a brown surtout coat and scotch bonnet, pretends to have some knowledge of Physick. (Information found in Journal and Correspondence of the Maryland Council of Safety, July 7-December 31, 1776. Vol. 12, p296 & 297.)
In some other information that I have from "North Carolina, Provincial Congress, 20 April 1776 - 10 May 1776, Vol. 10, p594-603" states that "Kenneth Stuart did actually take up Arms and go forth to War as Lieutenant in Capt. Stuart's Company..." There is also an Alexander Stuart mentioned as going to war.
Does anyone have Kenneth Stuart in your line? I am most interested in knowing if he was apprehended and where. I am attempting to find out that same information on my grandfather. I would truly appreciate hearing from you.
