Hello Particia,
Claiborne's second oldest son John R. Stewart stated that the rebels tried to force him into the army but that he hid out in the mountains and later worked cutting wood for the union army.
I'm sure alot of unionist in the south had to hide out in the hills for self preservation, but I think with his statements that he had a cousin in a michigan regiment who served through the end of the war is a strong coincidence.I will keep searching for information that may tie our families together.
Another coincidence:Claiborne and his family all moved to Jackson County, Alabama in 1866.You had mentioned that James had a sister living in Alabama at the time of his death and that Alexander Ramsey Stewart was in DeKalb Co. Alabama in 1870.
Thanks for the info.
Robby
