Hi, Norma,
According to the book, General A. P. Stewart:His Life and Letters, by Marshall Wingfield (1954, West Tennessee Historical Society, Memphis, TN):
“James Stewart, III (1761-1843), son of James Stewart Jr. and Isabella _________, married Lydia Moorehead (or Morehead), a native of County Tyrone, Ireland, by whom he had seven sons and five daughters. [One of these children was CHARLES Moorehead Stewart (1797-1872), and another was William Stewart (1791-1870).Charles and William married DECHERD sisters.Their other brothers and sisters and detailed in the last paragraph below.]
“William Stewart (1791-1870) and his brother CHARLES Moorehead [Stewart] (1797-1872) came from Delaware to Abingdon, Virginia, in early manhood and there married, respectively, Elizabeth and ELLEN DECHERD.These sisters who thus became sisters-in-law were born in Abingdon (Elizabeth in 1796 and ELLEN in 1802) whither their parents Michael and Elizabeth (Spyker) [pronounced SPEAKER] Decherd had come from Berks County, Pennsylvania, shortly after the Revolution.Michael Decherd [father of Elizabeth and Ellen] and his family moved to Winchester, Tennessee in 1829 and prospered."...
..."A memorandum of Joseph-James Stewart, Jr., owned by his nephew Joseph James Stewart of Baltimore, gives the children of James Stewart, III as follows:
Jane, who married a Mr. Dixon and went to Ohio
William of Winchester, Tennessee [who married Elizabeth Decherd]
Margaret, who married a Mr. Ryninger of Philadelphia
Joseph-James of Baltimore
Samuel of Fincastle, Virginia
Alexander who died in Alabama in 1828, leaving one son, Charles
CHARLES, who [married ELLEN DECHERD and] died in VAN BUREN, ARKANSAS, leaving a daughter Mrs. Julia Foster
Solomon, unmarried, mayor of Hernando, Mississippi
Louisa who died in Wilmington, unmarried
Lydia, who married a Mr. Lyttle and had a daughter
Mary who married and died without children
Robert who married, moved to Wisconsin, and was last heard from in 1828."
Hope this helps!I'm a direct descendant of Elizabeth Decherd Stewart.I have a fair amount of info on the Stewart family she married into.
Sincerely,
Laura Kline
