The following obituary appeared in the WINSTON-SALEM JOURNAL August 6, 2004.According to Stuart/Stewart researcher Teresa del Rios, his grandparents were Jackson Stuart and Sarah Catherine Blevins.Jackson was the son of George Washington Stuart Mary Francis Stuart. George was the son of Joseph and Margaret (Dean?) Stuart.Joseph moved to Ashe County with George Washington Stuart late in life from Carroll/Grayson in Virginia.He was the son of John b. c 1725.John is first documented in Henry County, Virginia.John's wife at the time of his death was Rachel.If anyone can confirm the maiden name of either Margaret or Rachel, please post a reply.
Obituary:Carmon Jackson Stuart of 1244 Arbor Road, formerly of Dogwood Drive, Greensboro, died Wednesday, August 4, 2004, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.He was born in Ashe County on June 5, 1914 to Beulah [Blevins] and Claud Stuart.He graduated from Appalachian State University and then Duke University Law School in 1938.Following two years with the Broughton Law Firm in Raleigh, where he met his future wife, Elsie Pegram, he began a career with the FBI, which carried him to several cities and ended with his retirement in 1964 as the resident agent in Winston-Salem.He then became the solicitor and city attorney for Winston-Salem until 1971.At that time, he was appointed as the clerk of court for the Federal Middle District of North Carolina.Following his retirement from this position in 1983 and until recently, he was instrumental in the formation and operation of the Duke Private Adjudication Center at Duke University Law School.Among the many awards he received in his long and distinguished career was the "Angie" award given by the N. C. Bar Association.He was recognized as "the father of court-ordered arbitration in North Carolina."In September, 2003, he co-chaired a committee of the N.C. Bar Association which wrote and published a book entitled Alternative Dispute Resolution in North Carolina, which serves as a handbook for the state's attorneys.Carmon loved the study of law and served his entire career as a public servant.At the time of his death at age 90, Carmon was using his computer to write a series of stories that describe significant events in his life.Preceding him in death was his beloved wife, Elsie, in 1989.He is survived by his daughter, Lee Anne Stuart Stiffler and husband Gary of Winston-Salem; two sons, David Stuart and wife Janet of Sunset Beach and Jack Stuart of Charlotte; a sister, Grace Brown and husband Carl of Kannapolis; a granddaughter, Kelly Stuart of Cincinnati, Ohio; and a grandson, Eric Stuart of Raleigh.There will be a family visitation from 6 to 8 this evening, August 6, at Voglers reynolds Chapel.There will be a private graveside service Saturday in Greensboro.In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a charity of the donor's choice.The family wishes to thank the staff of Arbor Acres for their love and care of Carmon, the work and assistance of Dr. Kutcher and his staff and the staff of the 10th floor, Reynolds Tower at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.
