Rick, there are some Stewarts that were royal. You'd probably have to know more about your lineage to determine if you're descended from the Royal Stewart of Scotland. I haven't made my definate connection to the royal line, but I do know that they were from Renfrewshire in Scotland, as are my ancestors. I was also told when I went to Paisley in December that the original spelling of the name is Stewart, but that the French sometimes spelled the name Stuart (that would have been dealing with the royals, mind you) because the French don't have a "w" in their alphabet?? I don't know how true that is as I do not speak French, but I do know that I've found records for my ancestors with both spellings.
I'd also like to know more about my Stewart ancestors. I don't have my work in front of me, but I do know that the farthest back I've got is a Robert Stewart/Stuart (b. abt. 1770) married to a Margaret Buchanan in Glasgow. They had several children (all born in Kilbarchan and some were christened in the village of Paisley), but I descend from their daughter Jean Stewart who married Joseph Nathaniel Gordon. Some of their descendants were also born in Kilbarchan, Bridge of Weir, Houston and Killellan in Scotland.
If anyone can provide insight as how to find more information about this, I'd really like to know, myself.
Good luck to you too, Rick!
