John Stewart - missionary
I am a descendant of George Stewart who married Delphia Pierce Aug. 26, 1808 in Spotsylvania Co., VA.They are on the 1810 Census for Spotsylvania Co. By 1820 they are in Mercer Co., KY.I have a will of John Stewart who left all his property "to my loving brother George Stewart" and made George the executor of his estate July l3, 1825. I believe George died before 1830 because his widow is on the 1830 Census.
Now the question:In the late 1970's 2 African-American males knocked on my mother's door in Mercer Co., KY.I believe one was Dr. Gil Butler. My mother had a news clipping of Dr. Gil Butler at Upper Sandusky. They said they were gggnephews of the John Stewart who was a missionary to the Wyandot Indians in Ohio. They said they had done a lot of research on the Stewarts and had traced John to the farm where my mother lived. (That land had been in my family since George Stewart settled there.)My mother remembered hearing that a Stewart man had been involved with a slave girl. She waspossibly pregnant and he loved her. They left together and the family did not know what happened to them. They were very nice men. They even spent the night there. I was younger and busier in the 1970's and didn't write down all that my mother said but I did take her to visit Upper Sandusky before she died in 1980.Because of those 2 men I believe there is a connection there but do not know what it is.I have searched for the Dr. Gil Butler and cannot find him.
Does any of this sound familiar to anyone?I have a lot of info on the descendants of George and Delphia.
Thank you.
Emma
