Hello
You have not given dates for your STEVENS.I do not know the sibilings of Dr. George William Stevens. He lived and worked in the Saline / Hardin Counties of Illinois. You are welcome to have the STEVENS descendants. If you can make a connection - fine.
Descendants of Dr. George William Stevens
Generation No. 1
GEORGE WILLIAM STEVENS was born January 01, 1838 in Kentucky, and died June 27, 1896 in Hardin Co., IL.He married MARY ELIZABETH LIPSCOMB in
Raleigh, Saline County, Illinois
Notes for GEORGE WILLIAM STEVENS:
HE WAS SHOT FROM AMBUSH IN BLIND HOLLOW.
DR. STEVENS SERVED IN THE CIVIL WAR AND A MEMORIAL HEADSTONE MARKS THE GRAVE IN ADAMS CEMETERY, ROCK CREEK COMMUNITY
Stevens, Dr. G.W. a Union Soldier - Jan. 1, 1838 - June 27, 1896
Dr. Stevens was also a minister. Dr. Stevens was the minister of many of the funerals back in the 1880's.
William S. Stevens, age 22, resident of Hardin County, born in Campbell Co. KY. the son of George W. Stevens and Mary E. Lipscomb, his fist marriage, to Addie Lee Shewmaker, age 21, resident and born in Hardin County, the daughter of David B. Shewmaker and Nancy E. Cavender Shewmaker, her first marriage. Witnesses: George W. Stevens and Wm. Davis. Married Oct 10, 1886 in Hardin County, Illinois
Frank R. Price, resident of and born in Hardin County a farmer, age 23, son of Arthur Price and mother,____Frailey. His first marriage married Etta A. Stevens, age 15 years, the daughter of George W. and Mary Elizabeth Lipscomb Stevens, resident of Hardin Co. born in Saline Co. IL., Married Jan 11, 1893. Consent for bride given by George W. Stevens and Mary E. Stevens.
James Price of Cave in Rock was born in 1917, the son of Frank and Etta Stevens Price. He lost his wife, Marie McDowell Price, maybe a couple of years ago. He wrote a book on the Frailey’s. Etta Ann and Francis R. Price are buried in Mt Zion cemetery, Hardin County, IL.
DOCTOR GEORGE STEVENS (Stories of the Lamb Community, Hardin County, Illinois by Ruby Franklin Hall)
The death of Doctor George Stevens was a regrettable incident that shocked the entire community.Doctor Stevens and a brother fought on the side of the union during the Civil War.His brother was killed.
After the war was over he married Mary Elizabeth Lipscomb at Raleigh, Illinois and came to the Lamb community to make his home.He purchased forty acres of land one half mile west of the village of Lamb. This forty acres is now owned (1976) by Charley Jones.
The house that Dr. Stevens lived in was down on the old road and across the creek from where Charley Jones built his house. When this writer was growing up in the Community, it was called the Old Burklow Place. It was indeed a stroke of good luck for the Community when Dr. Stevens and his new bride decided to make their home in Lamb.
A community that could boast two doctors was considered socially above communities that had only one doctor. The other doctor in the Lamb Community was Doctor Willingham.
There was a widow woman living in the Community with six children and with the children's diseases. It seemed that one of the children was sick all the time, as Dr. Stevens buggy was seen at her house two or three times a week.
There are individuals that misinterpret Doctor and Patient relationships. These individuals always spread rumors and think the worse. Ugly rumors reached the ears of one William (Bill) Hall, whom it seems took it upon himself to protect the good name of the widow.
Mr. Hall called on Dr. Stevens to be sure that he was aware of the rumor going around. Dr. Stevens misjudged the intentions of Mr. Hall's visit, and became very indicative. Angry words led to blows, with Dr. Stevens grabbing his pistol and shooting at Mr. Hall - Mr. Hall had to run for his life.
The people in the Community knew that Dr. Stevens was a happily married man.He had a good wife and five children, and was completely devoted to them and his home. For Dr. Stevens to become romantically involved with one of his patients and run the risk of having the Medical Association revoke his License, was unthinkable.
This was what upset the good Doctor, to think that there were people that believed that he
was stupid enough to jeopardize the security of his home and family on a trifle fling.
When Mr. Hall told his family about Dr. Stevens shooting at him, one of his sons Henry Hall, had to be physically restrained from taking a gun and going hunting for Dr. Stevens.
After the shooting incident everyone knew that there would be a shoot-out when Mr. Hall and Dr. Stevens met.
But before they got the chance to meet, Dr. Stevens was returning from making a house call in the vicinity of Blind Hollow, where he was shot from ambush and killed. The date was June 27, 1896.
The Sheriff made a quick visit to the scene of the murder and then returned to Elizabethtown. He never arrested anyone for this terrible deed. Now Mr. Hall was serving his first term as County Judge at this same time, and it is believed by some people that Judge hall put political pressure on the State's Attorney to get the investigation
dropped.
The years passed and the murder of Dr. Stevens became another Community mystery.
It was general information that Mr. Hall was afraid that one of his sons would kill Dr. Stevens and get into trouble. That is why a lot of people believed that Mr. Hall hired someone to kill Dr. Stevens.
Several people believed that Morgan Tucker killed Dr. Stevens.Everybody knew that Mr. Tucker and Mr. Hall were very close friends, having been neighbors and brother members in the Secret Order of the White Caps (this was an organization formed for neighborhood protection during the turbulent years of Logan Belt) and if Mr. Tucker thought that Mr. Hall's life was in danger, he without a doubt would have killed Dr. Stevens.
Also it was thought by several people that Mr. Hall hired Big John Gentry, a hanger-on of the late Logan Belt Gang to kill Dr. Stevens. This was supported by the fact that when Mr. Hall took his death-bed, Mr. Gentry would not leave his bedside.Mr. Gentry stayed by the bedside of Mr. Hall for 36 hours before Mr. Hall died.
Why did Mr. Gentry stay by the bedside of Mr. Hall before he died?
Was he afraid that Mr. Hall would become unconscious and talk?
Was there a pact between Mr. Gentry and Mr. Hall?Maybe it was a pact that whichever one took to his deathbed first, the other one would remain by his bedside until he passed away.We do not know, but this pact could well have been included in the rites of the secret Order of White Caps.
Another man that might have killed Dr. Stevens was Jiles Price. My father, George Hall was a teenage boy at the time Dr. Stevens was killed.Dad would go over to Uncle Jiles Price's and borrow his shot gun to go squirrel hunting. They would not let him have the shotgun at home to go squirrel hunting, because they thought he was too young to have a gun.
On the day that Dr. Stevens was killed Dad went over to Uncle Jiles to borrow his shotgun to go squirrel hunting, but Aunt Molly told him that Jiles had taken the gun and gone squirrel hunting.Jiles Price was William (Bill) Hall's father-in-law.Mr. Hall married his daughter, Ellen. Would Mr. Price have killed Dr. Stevens because he was afraid that one of his grandsons might kill him and get into trouble? He could have.
It was believed by a lot of people that judge Hall did know who killed Dr. Stevens and that he did apply political pressure to get the investigation dropped.
In closing, I will ask the reader: "Who killed Dr. Stevens?"

Things I Think About When I Am By Myself, and Lonesome.
Lenora Stevens Hill
I am the 4th of 12 children; one brother and two sisters older than me.My oldest sister died before I was born, so I never knew her.
My oldest brother, Robert, better know as Bob was my half brother, but we never thought of him as being a half brother. He was the best brother anyone could ever want.He was 11 years older than me.He always teased us a lot.He used to read to us.When Imogene and I worked in the fields with him he would tell us jokes and sing to us.We thought he was the greatest person in the world. He is gone now, but I still think about him a lot.It makes me sad, because he had such a short life, and always worked so hard.
The rest of us were so close in age, we played together and fought with each other, like most kids do.
I always thought Imogene was a lot smarter than me.She learned to sew and cut hair at a very young age.I remember one time; she cut my hair, and by the time she got all the gaps out, it was up above my ears, all the way around.I still think she is smart and has a lot of talent and a creative mind. She is the one I talk to when I need to talk to someone.
Wanda and I were always close when we were kids, people thought we were twins. For years we were the same size. Our Mother always dressed us alike.I remember when we started to school, I would come home and make Wanda do all the things I did that day.She is the only one out of 11 that graduated from high school.I tell everyone that I taught her everything she knows.
Venita was always a sweet person, a Daddy’s girl, very timid and easily hurt.I don’t remember her doing anything that she shouldn’t.
Paul, being my Mother’s first boy, after 5 girls, was a little bit spoiled.I remember him being a fat sweet baby. There was so many of us, we didn’t have enough chairs for all of us to sit down to eat.We always ate at the table, not all over the house like we do now.Paul always stood by Daddy while we ate.He would stand for a while, then he would say “Daddy can I sit on your E?”Daddy would always let him sit on his knee.Paul is gone now.
He died of acute leukemia related to his military service in World War 11.He stayed with me off and on the last 25 years of his life, except the last 5 months, after he got too sick to be very far from the hospital. He stayed with Lillie the last 5 months of his life.He was very unhappy most of the time.
I remember Arzella being a beautiful baby.I remember when Imogene and I would start to school, we would tell our Mother to be sure and not let the baby cry.She is still very pretty and very talented. When she was a kid, she was full of mischief.
Lillie was a sweet baby.I was 8 years older than her.I took care of her a lot while our Mother worked in the garden and one fall while she picked cotton.Lillie was always so little.I always tried to take care of her.She was always special to me.But, I didn’t love her anymore than the rest. She was only two when our Mother died.
Our Mother died when my youngest brother, Woodie was only 6 weeks old, and he went to live with my Aunt Jenny, my Mother’s sister. We went to visit them a lot the year he lived with them.We loved to go to Aunt Jenny’s house.
She always baked a cake.I thought she baked the best cakes.Imogene, me, Wanda, Lugene, and Idean, my cousins, always had to wait to eat until the grown ups and
the little ones ate, because there wasn’t room at the table for everyone to eat at the same time.Idean would always get the cake that was saved for us.She would give me, Wanda and Lugene a little piece. She and Imogene would have a big piece.
I remember when we brought Woodie home, they all cried, even my uncle. He didn’t let anyone see him cry.He went down to the barn.Uncle Roy, my mother’s brother was living with Aunt Jenny at that time.He told us kids if we didn’t take good care of Woodie, he would come and get him and take him back to Aunt Jenny. We believed him.We tried to take real good care of him.We were glad to have him home.
I remember when Woodie was about 4; he would slip off to the tomato patch. He would come back wiping his face, and say “You can’t see anything on my shirt can you?”He would have tomato seeds all down the front of his shirt.
Daddy married my stepmother; and Frances was born the next year. She was a real good baby, happy where ever she was.If you wanted to hold her you could. We tried to spoil her.We loved rocking her, but she was just as happy being left alone.Vivian was born two years later. She was
a beautiful baby. She was all together different from Frances. She loved to be held and rocked. We loved
spoiling her.She is still a beautiful lady.I married when Frances and Vivian were not very old.I didn’t spend as
much time with them as I did the rest.Frances use to visit with me a lot.I worked in the fields with her.We had a lot of good talks.Vivian visited me sometimes; we always had a good visit.I think she thought she could talk to me about things she couldn’t tell anyone else.
We used to visit my Aunt Lillie. She was Daddy’s sister.I liked going to her house. She always made hot rolls. She was a very good cook.Daddy’s other sister; Aunt Etta lived next door to us one time. She made candy a lot.She always sent us some.I liked going to her house. She was a very good cook too.Aunt Etta used to make us dresses. She embroidered pretty flowers on them. She didn’t have any girls at that time.Aunt Lillie made rag dolls for us.
In the summer of 1930 we went to visit my Uncle Moss.He lived at Monette. We went in a wagon. We went to Uncle Robert Watson’s; he lived at Stanford. He was Uncle Moss’s Daddy. We stayed the night with them. The next day we started on to Monette. We got to Paragould about noon.Daddy got Vienna sausages, pork and beans and bread for lunch. The bread wasn’t sliced back then.We stopped a little ways out of town and ate lunch.
We stayed a few days at Uncle Moss’s.On the way back, we stopped at Paragould again for lunch. That was the first time us kids ate in a restaurant.
The owner was a friend of Daddy and Momma’s.He put three tables together for us.Daddy had sausage and gravy. All of us kids had sausage and gravy like Daddy.Momma had steak. After we got done eating, the owner gave all of us kids a pack of Juicy Fruit gum. That was the first whole pack of gum that we ever had.
My Mother died in March 1931.She got sick on her 39th birthday, March 17th.I remember Aunt Susie, her sister being there.I remember her sitting by Momma’s bedside.I can remember Daddy telling Bob to take the wagon and team, and go tell Aunt Jenny, Momma’s sister, if she wanted to see Momma alive again for her to come back with him.Daddy told Bob to run the team all the way.
That was something Daddy didn’t do.He never let anyone run his mules.
Aunt Jenny got there before she died.Momma ask her to take Woodie, for she knew she was going to die, and that Daddy could not take care of such a little baby, because he had to work. There were so many people at our house.A
neighbor, Birdie Compton asked some of us older kids to sleep at their house.Imogene, Venita, Wanda, and I stayed the night at their house.
Drew Compton sat up with Daddy that night. He came home when it was barely getting light and told Miss Birdie that Momma had died.We hear him.We jumped out of
bed and ran all the way home.Momma died the 24th, at age 39 years and 7 days.Birdie Compton made the dress she was buried in.It was brown silk with white lace trim.It makes me sad to think about my mother. She had such a short life. But, I am sure God know best.
Daddy was a farmer and worked close to home.We kids stayed at the house by our selves. We made it pretty good as long as we stayed in the house. If we went outside to play, we were afraid to go back inside, until Daddy came in from work.
So the years went by, we all married, had our own families. We don’t see each other very much, but when we do, we enjoy being together.
I have lots of nieces and nephews. One niece (Charlene) told me, I was unique.Another (Debbie) said I was like a second Mother to her.Two nephews (Gary and Phil) told me I was their favorite aunt. They make me feel special.
I am happy to be part of this family.I don’t know anyone that I would trade places with.
