Goff,
You would need to follow up more on this to be sure it is the same Mercy Stevens.
When I read what you said about the Smithfield records showing her living with Ivory Downs I figured she was either his sister - perhaps widowed or some other relation. Of course she also could have been a housekeeper, cook or other household help.
So I went to familysearch.org to see if I could find her.
I found
MERCY DOWNS born about 1782 Dearborn, ME
married: Benjamine Stevens May 4, 1804 Lebanon, York, ME
I took a look at the 1840 census you mention and see that Mercy Stevens is right next door to Ivory Downs and there is a Benjamin Stevens close by. Benjamin is age 20-30 so could possible be her son? There are other Stevens in the same town as well.
In 1850 I found Ivory Downs age 60 with his wife and children. Living with them is an Amanda Horne age 22
I looked to see if there was a Benjamin Stevens in 1850 Smithfield. There is as well as a Milton Stevens who also has an Amanda Horne living with him. I thought that was interesting. She is shown as 25 but I wonder if she is the same girl but on a different census day??
Anyway, this is all something to think about.
Carolyn L.
